Music Making and Progression - KS3 KS4 KS5
Rationale
Music making can act as a key mechanism for engaging young people in the learning environment. Research carried out by Youth Music and Birmingham City University in 2019 demonstrated that schools working with specialist youth music education providers engaged successfully young people who experienced barriers to participation. They found that:
- Young people at risk of exclusion at the outset of the programme maintained high levels of attendance (>95%)
- Excluded young people were able to re-enter mainstream education after having been excluded.
- Two-thirds of the young people maintained or improved their attainment in English and three-quarters of young musicians maintained or improved their attainment in Maths.
- Young people experienced emotional, psychological and social wellbeing outcomes, developing teamwork and empathy skills, improving behaviour and motivation.
Music Education Islington (MEI) has drawn up a menu of youth providers of music making activities, which schools and Council services working with young people can access to book provision during 2020-21.
When you book through MEI, we will work to ensure that the provision is affordable and, where possible, free to schools and Council services.
