All childminders and their assistants are expected to update their knowledge within specific areas of training. You should keep any evidence of attending training, including certificates. Please inform the childminder coordinators if you complete any courses organised by other organisations. 

You need to pay for all Continuing Professional Development (CPD) carried out by the Early Years Team including statutory training, either as part of our annual CPD package or individually. Details of the CPD packages can be found in the CPD Annual Service Package for Childminders.

Additional courses are available through the EY CPD brochure and the 'One Workforce CPD Programme - Integrated Training Working Brochure' (ITWB) produced by the Islington Safeguarding Children Board. 


Safeguarding

If you work or volunteer with children and young people, you must be alert to any issues of concern in the child’s life at home or elsewhere. You must have a clear understanding of the definitions and indicators of abuse and neglect. You must also be informed and have knowledge of the local safeguarding board policies, procedures and guidelines when there are safeguarding concerns about a child and in the event of an allegation being made against a member of staff and a member of the household.

Below is information about courses that you must attend.

 

Early Years Safeguarding and Child Protection Induction (Group 1)-  Half Day

This is a valuable introduction to safeguarding and child protection for all new childcare practitioners; including prospective childminders and childminding assistants, this course will introduce the basic concepts of child abuse, including signs and indicators of abuse and the necessary Islington safeguarding/child protection legislation and procedures.

 

Safeguarding and Information Sharing (Group 2) – One Day

Once, you are registered as a childminder you will then be required to attend the one-day Safeguarding and Information sharing within 6 months of registering with Ofsted.This course aims to provide all participants with a clear understanding of safeguarding and child protection and information sharing processes as it relates to their role and responsibilities.

This course is run by Islington Safeguarding Children’s Board (Islington Safeguarding. You only need to attend this once, this can be booked via the Islington Safeguarding training channel).

Safeguarding and Child Protection Update (Group 2-5)

Childminders are required to update their training and complete the Safeguarding and Child Protection training update every three years.This half day course aims to refresh and update safeguarding/child protection knowledge, national, regional and local safeguarding policy and practice.To access this course you must have attended Group 1 ‘Safeguarding and Child Protection Induction’ and the one-day Group 2 ‘Safeguarding and Information Sharing Foundation’ delivered by the Islington Safeguarding.

The Safeguarding and Child Protection Update is delivered by the early year’s team, (please search and book a place via the training hub under ‘Safeguarding and Welfare requirements’). The cost for childminders or assistants to access this course is £57, unless you purchase the Continuing Professional Development Package. (CPD)

Alternatively, the Islington Safeguarding Children’s Board (Islington Safeguarding) deliver the Safeguarding and Child Protection Update, courses run monthly and are free of charge.

 

Childminding Assistants

Childminding assistants must complete the following training: Safeguarding Induction (Group 1), one-day Safeguarding and Information Sharing Foundation (Group 2) and the Safeguarding and Child Protection update every three years. 

 

 


First Aid

All those working or volunteering with children are required to attend the two-day Paediatric First aid course every three years. Childminders, and any assistant who might be in sole charge of children for any period of time, must hold a current paediatric first aid certificate. First Aid training is booked on the EYCPD Training channel:
